We Call BS. Clean Beauty Marketing & Myths, Pt II.

image0.jpeg

The first step is admitting. So, I encourage everyone to admit that you don't know what you are putting on your body. Until, you read that label. The online description, the packaging, the name may entail the product is safe, effective, natural, luxurious, etc. Unfortunately, you are fed lies, we all are. Now, I am not saying that every beauty brand is a liar, all I am saying is that marketing can be very deceiving. And falling for it doesn’t mean that you are naive it means that you would never, purposely, intentionally deceive people and you expect the same in return.

What qualifies me to explain this information? Absolutely nothing. Besides the fact that I care, I read, I research, I try products, I read labels, I chat with chemists and some other things. Intune has said it before, and we will say it again, we don’t like being lied to. That is one of the driving forces behind our brand. Transparency. We want to be transparent because that is what consumers deserve. So, we are calling bull$iht and busting myths.

Don't believe everything a label says. The name and product packaging is tricking you.

  • Mario Badescu skin care has exploded in recent years and for good reason. This brand has desirable products at a great price point. Every store you step into, you can find these face mists. For example, the Rosewater face spray. First of all, this spray contains no rosewater, only a small extract from the seeds of wild roses. So, that pretty pink color and rose scent is fake. It is not from rosewater, it’s from synthetic dyes and fragrance, which is not good for your skin. Why would you want to put dye on your face? Good thing you have a choice.

  • Ouai hair care and beauty brand is very popular and don’t get me wrong, they have some great products! But I do have a problem with some of their ingredients. Their Rose Hair + Body Oil looks great, feels great and smells great. But that is because once again, it is filled with synthetic dyes and fragrance, with a little rosehip oil. Call me crazy? But I pay big bucks for these highlights so why would I want to put Red 17 (Ci 26100) in my hair?

Start questioning the hygiene/beauty products that you’ve been using your entire life and ask why?

  • I didn’t purposely volunteer as the spokesperson against Vaseline, it happened naturally. If you are anything like me, you’ve been a lover of petroleum jelly as long as you can remember. Your grandmother, your mother, your sister and you all thought of it as a go-to solution. My entire life I used Vaseline on my lips, nose, eyes, cuts, burns, lady parts, etc because that is all I had ever known. Turns out, petroleum jelly is a by-product of the oil industry and should not be on your skin.

  • Are you still lathering up with perhaps, Dove soap or body wash? Maybe you're more of a Caress or Olay kind of girl. Either way, you’ve probably been using (a version) of the same body cleansing products your entire life. I challenge you to question this. Our society is hyper focused on being *clean* but what lengths do we need to go to stay clean? Shockingly, soap is pretty unnecessary in the shower. I realize this may sound crazy, but hear me out. Healthy skin pH is around 5.5 but most conventional soaps, derived from mixing fat or oil with an alkali, such as lye, have a much higher pH. As a result, it can be more damaging than helpful to your skin. Soap throws off the natural pH balance of the skin, destroys healthy bacteria and strips away vital oils. So, while there is a time and place for conventional soaps, we can strive for more natural cleansing agents on a regular basis.

For some, this may not come as a surprise, but others might be shaking their heads with disapproval. The point of this blog post isn’t to tear down other brands or products. The point is to call attention to systematic issues within the beauty, skin, hygiene industry. We shouldn’t keep blindly buying the same products just because it is what we have always done. We shouldn’t keep trusting everything that product marketing tells us. I challenge everyone to simply start being more aware and start thinking about what is best for you and your body, you only get one. So, make it a good one.
